Live Review - Black Time / 202's at Crawdaddy 31.1.09

Due to the one off Psychotic Reaction being held at the earlier time of 8pm to its usual late night show the attendance suffered at this event. But the one thing is, the quality of music certainly did not suffer!

Openning for Black Time were Dublin's own 202's. This was my first time seeing these guys and i must say i was quite impressed. With a sound not so far from what I would see as a Velvet Underground meets early Verve influence that at times had some element of a country version of the Modern Lovers. I can see great things for these guys. Beleive they have an album out pretty soon? Check'em out at www.myspace.com/the202s

Next came the evenings main event in the form of In The Red Records only London based act Black Time. I recently picked up their latest LP Double Negative from Tower Records and was plesently blown away by it! I had heard some of their earlier releases and i must say i liked it but i found it at times to lean a bit more towards the noizy art rock to which i find a bit hard to listen to...In saying that they don't travel to far from that on this record but they defo get it right!

There show was all of 35 minutes on excellent art punk gems. With a very simple stage set up of just 2 guitars and what looked like half a drum kit, along with that they're on stage energy was electric. The great thing was that they didn't seem to be fazed by the bad turn out to the show and they really got into it... I my only hope now is that they'll come back to play Dublin again and next time the cities gig goers will have more sence and spend the evening in Black Times presence...
